Astronomy – The Night Sky


Enrolment Requirements

This course is designed for people who have an interest in space and would like to be able to find their way around the night sky, as well as explore some of the science and history of space. This is an opportunity to take time out to develop your interests, extend your skills and build your confidence in astronomy.

What will I learn on this course?

    The weekly 2 hour classes will alternate between the classroom and outdoor observations (weather permitting). We will learn about the different constellations visible in a suburban environment, how they are named and how their positions vary throughout the year. We will consider other readily observable phenomena, such as satellites, planets and The Moon as well as covering rarer astronomical events such as meteor showers, comets (Comet 46P/Wirtanen should be easily observable mid-December), transits and eclipses. We will learn to use basic astronomical instruments and understand some of the science behind how they work.

Assessment and Awarding Body: non-accredited

Activities and work will be assessed by your tutor.


You will be expected to attend every week. If you cannot attend, you will be set work to ensure you meet your learning outcomes.

What else do I need to know?

Observations will be planned to take place outdoors during winter months, so learners must dress appropriately for the weather, with an understanding that it feels much cooler standing still for long periods of time. You will be expected to provide your own binoculars (a £10-£20 set will be sufficient), torch and red filter (the wrapper of a red quality street and an elastic band works best!).

This course may inspire you to visit the Dark Sky Park at Kielder Water and Forest, join a local astronomical society or even enrol onto a GCSE astronomy class.
