French Beginners Term 1, 2 & 3


Enrolment Requirements

The course is aimed at those who have no previous knowledge of the language or only very
basic previous knowledge.

What will I learn on this course?

    A variety of everyday topics will be covered such as introducing yourself, buying snacks and drinks, asking for directions, booking accommodation and shopping. The emphasis will be on speaking, although other activities will include listening to French and reading short extracts.

Assessment and Awarding Body: non-accredited

Activities and work will be assessed by your tutor.


You will be expected to attend every week. If you cannot attend, you will be set work to ensure you meet your learning outcomes.

What else do I need to know?

The sessions provide a fun, interesting and relaxed learning environment, where you will be encouraged to participate. During the sessions, many of the activities require you to work in pairs and small groups, using simple French. The course will be loosely based on the BBC book Talk French 1, which is available with or without CDs. There is no requirement to purchase this, though many learners choose to do so. You are asked to bring pens and paper to each session. A ring binder would also be useful so that you can build up a portfolio of work covered, and use it for reference. Doing extra work at home will help to strengthen your language skills. Homework will be issued during the course, but is recommended rather than compulsory.
